Folk Music 2015

Most folk music clubs centre their activities around hiring professional folk singers or bands to perform at their regular meetings. At such club events, members will generally sit, watch and listen to the performance of the professional acts.

The OiRAyr Folk Club is different from most other folk clubs in that no professionals are hired to perform at the club sessions. All of the performed music & song entertainment is delivered by our own club members. These talented individuals have a passion, not just folk music, but for many other genres of musical tastes. Participation & involvement by our members is the key to our existence and success

With a club membership of around forty regular OiR members, and a pool of around twenty singers/musicians, supported by several excellent story tellers, the club is never short of talented individuals able to put on a highly entertaining 2½ hour afternoon variety show.

The “Vintage Blend” variety show is how we describe ourselves when we are out and about participating in outreach activities throughout the local community. From charity events to fundraisers, church guilds to Highland Games, Age Concern to Invigor8, Christmas lunch parties to Burns suppers, the list goes on. All these activities have been great sources of enjoyment and pleasure to our audiences.  If:

  • you are 50 or over, or a retired individual (only from paid work), and looking for an activity that is personally satisfying and rewarding
  • you fancy yourself as a singer or musician
  • you just prefer to listen to music, and would like to meet others who also just like to sit and listen, then the OiR Folk Club could be just for you.

OiR AYR - SUMMER FUNDRAISER - 01.08.17:   Pat Kane's reported on the fundraiser below and included photos of the event (courtesy of David Bowman).

"Yet another “Sold Out” OiR summer fundraising concert at Newton Wallacetown Church Hall, with a brilliant sum of £500+ being raised by our fantastic members through ticket sales and donations.  A wonderful afternoon of “Golden Oldies” from the 50’s & 60’s (when many of our members were in their teens and switched on by Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Beatles etc).  All performed by members of our own OiR Folk Group: John, Denis, Gordon and Pat along with amazing solo performances from Bobby and Jinty.

A very special thanks to all volunteers who came in early to assist with setting up the hall in preparation for the arrival of our audience. Special thanks to Moira Kane for managing the ticket sales and numerous other logistics, and to David Bowman for opening the event, for providing a much-deserved vote of thanks to all involved, and for taking the photos of the event. Looking forward to next year.

PS:  I didn't attend the event, but used the BTMyDonate to add to this very worthwhile day.  If you feel you'd like to donate this way, at any time,  just click the button at the top of the page and enter the amount you wish to donate.  Thank you - OiR Webmaster.
