WHISKY TASTING GROUP

Discussion with a local whisky merchant has revealed that they are very keen to link in with OiR Ayr to host Whisky Tasting evenings. The initial proposed evening tasting has been earmarked for February 2018 and will last approximately 2 hours.  However, before booking the event, we need to establish if there is enough interest within OiR for the tasting to take place.  The plan is to open the event to about 20 people - cost to be advised once numbers have been confirmed

If you are interested please contact Tom Mathers as soon as possible by e-mail (tom.mathers@btinternet.com) with the subject title “Whisky Tasting”.  If you do not have an e-mail address, then you may contact him on 01292 475113.  In any event, please contact Tom by 20th December 2017 if you would like to attend.  Once the number of members showing interest is known, and a date and time have been agreed, he will contact everyone by e-mail (or phone - if you don’t have an e-mail address).  Please note that Tom will give attendance priority to those who contact him first - just in case there are too many members interested!

The Ayr & District Flower Show at Ayr Racecourse over the 18th and 19th August was perhaps the most perfect showcase of OiR Ayr and how we come together to support our local community. Our Folk Group performers who were performing at regular intervals throughout, excelled themselves over the two days and all agree this was without question their best ever performance gig to date.  The racecourse was a wonderful venue and the position of the entertainment (inside the main concourse and conveniently near the coffee shop) was ideal for the many OiR supporters and friends who spent an enjoyable time in the audience, singing, clapping, cheering and occasionally even dancing! We were delighted to have an exhibitors stand too and thanks to our Chairman, Pat Kane, we had a wonderful gazebo erected (making us look most professional)!  Pull-up stands advertising OiR and the fabulous “OiR AYR 30 YEARS” banner kindly made by the Sew & Stitch Group for our 30th celebrations ensured we caught the eye of everyone who passed.  We were delighted that so many existing and potential members stopped and spoke to us and we were able to discuss the many benefits of OiR and our groups.  The people who stopped were pleased to receive copies of our “Shared Lives” book and copies of our summer 2017 newsletter were also widely circulated and enjoyed by many.  Application forms were also handed out and we even recruited some new members!! Thanks to Dr Neil Beattie we had a supply of “Message in a Bottle” kits which were given out and very much appreciated.

Through our membership we also recruited volunteer stewards for the event and this was very much appreciated. Huge thanks must go to everyone who gave their support throughout the event, be it performing, transporting equipment, setting up and taking down the gazebo not once but twice, stewarding, chatting to passers-by and manning the stand.  Our Chairman was even seconded as sound engineer for the other musical acts!!

When we were originally approached by Directors of The Ayr & District Flower Show, our remit was to provide entertainment and in return be given a stall.  In true OiR spirit we came together and provided so much more.  We have been overwhelmed with the kind thanks and gratitude expressed to us for being there and also being so flexible and co-operative. Through our membership we provided entertainment, volunteer stewards, information, technical knowledge and assistance and brought with us our now famous “rent a crowd” all whilst promoting OiR Ayr and all that we do. We also had a thoroughly enjoyable time!!  A “blooming” success!

Thanks to Pat Kane/Caroline Lyon for this report and photos.

OiR AYR - SUMMER FUNDRAISER:   Pat Kane's reported on the fundraiser below and included photos of the event (courtesy of David Bowman).  "Yet another 'Sold Out OiR summer fundraising concert at Newton Wallacetown Church Hall, with a brilliant sum of £500+ being raised by our fantastic members through ticket sales and donations.  A wonderful afternoon of “Golden Oldies” from the 50’s & 60’s (when many of our members were in their teens and switched on by Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Beatles etc).  All performed by members of our own OiR Folk Group: John, Denis, Gordon and Pat along with amazing solo performances from Bobby and Jinty.  A very special thanks to all volunteers who came in early to assist with setting up the hall in preparation for the arrival of our audience. Special thanks to Moira Kane for managing the ticket sales and numerous other logistics, and to David Bowman for opening the event, for providing a much-deserved vote of thanks to all involved, and for taking the photos of the event. Looking forward to next year."

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT):  Please contact Pat Kane if you feel the portable electrical equipment you use in your group could be below an acceptable standard.  This should ensure the safety of our members.  Details to Pat via the OiR Office.
